I wrote the first draft to What Happened to Serenity? more than thirteen years ago, and have taken the story through many rewrites since then, in between writing other books. Community is an ongoing theme that fascinates me and I enjoyed imagining how Katherine’s world could independently exist in our current Canadian culture.
What if the world wasn’t like what you were brainwashed to believe? Would you want to know? Are the
consequences of bucking authority worth it if they lead you to the truth? Katherine pursues these answers alone, in a place where children must outgrow their questions and accept the Facts, or else. But when Serenity disappears, Katherine realizes the growing danger to her own family and makes a choice that will affect her future – and theirs – forever.
